WHAT I WISH I KNEW BEFORE VISITING TANZANIA

My experience visiting Tanzania……

The very first time I visited Africa, I flew straight into Nairobi, Kenya. I had booked myself on an all inclusive safari adventure with a big adventure company. Here I was alone flying solo across the globe for the very reason I booked this adventure in the first place - to spot the incredible lion that i've longed to see for years and to be somewhere far away from normal life, from worklife and from my everyday routine.

We drove in a small mini-bus from our hotel in Nairobi across the border to Arusha in Tanzania. I will say Tanzania is a much prettier place than the bustling city of Nairobi. Visiting Tanzania for the first time was welcoming and exciting, for we had a jam-packed itinerary of many Tanzania excursions and destinations to look forward to.

On our very first day we bundled into the safari van and set on our journey. We were ecstatic to see zebras and giraffes for the first time. Little did we know by the end of the trip Zebra and Giraffe were an everyday occurrence as by then we had seen the most beautifully exotic wild animals and were yearning to see more lions, more leopards, more elephants. We spent every day spending numerous hours sitting, sleeping and looking out for that ever elusive animal. I yearned to see lions, lions are amazing to me. We definitely heard many lions at night. Their roars seem so near but are yet so far, thankfully! We camped three nights in the Serengeti, in what seemed like the middle of nowhere. Nothing surrounding us apart from wide stretched savannahs and more importantly, nothing protecting us from the wild animals. I couldn't sleep. Our guide told stories of encounters with lions that filled us with excitement and dread at the same time. Hyena’s loved our campsite, more so they loved the outside kitchen area that was made out of steel and situated right near our camps. They spent nearly all night scavenging for food LOUDLY. I didn’t manage to get an hour's sleep or a minute's peace but our Tanzania excursions were incredible! From exploring the Ngorongoro Crater to riding through the Serengeti and witnessing the Great Migration. Lake Manyara was fascinating too, especially as we got to see the flock of flamingos. Hot air ballooning across the Serengeti was unbelievable - memories that I shall never forget.

Visiting Tanzania has always been special to me, the place, the feeling. You cannot replica it anywhere else in Africa. Tanzania is filled with good souls, friendly acquaintances, peaceful ways, incredible views, stunning landscapes and memories of wild animals running wild and free will stay with me forever.

WHERE IS TANZANIA AND HOW TO GET THERE?

The country of Tanzania is located on the eastern side of the African continent. If you look at the map below, you'll see that it borders several other African countries like Kenya and Uganda to the north. On the west side is the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and to the south are Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique. As the map shows, Tanzania is well situated and connected to other beautiful countries that are also worth visiting. It is accessible by most modes of transport, with air and road travel being the most common.

Tanzania’s most connected airport to the northern circuit of national parks is Kilimanjaro International Airport. Even though it is small, it is one of the airports we recommend flying into to access some of the most well-known Tanzanian destinations. If you are unable to get a direct flight to Tanzania, flying into Nairobi, Kenya, is also a great option. It takes around six hours to drive from Nairobi to Arusha, which is just across the border and is known as the gateway to safaris. It is also only an hour away from Kilimanjaro Airport.

If you are dreaming of going on a Tanzania safari, there are many fantastic options to explore. We have some perfect tours to consider for your next adventure!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT TANZANIA?

If you are considering visiting Tanzania, it's essential to factor in the varied weather conditions that can influence your trip. Both the rainy and dry seasons have their advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to do some research before you book.

The months of July through September are peak season, as the weather is dry and warm. If you’re in the Serengeti during this time, you’ll have a good chance of witnessing the Great Migration, making it a particularly popular time to visit.

I’ve visited Tanzania in September many times in the past, and the weather was perfect. It wasn’t too hot or too cold, the skies were blue, and the climate was dry but cool, which is ideal for game drives. If you want to avoid large crowds, the Green Season, which runs from November to March, is a great alternative. It's much quieter in terms of tourism, and although there are occasional rain showers, the weather is still quite good.

I suggest avoiding visiting Tanzania in April and May, as this is when the heavy rainy season occurs. The showers can be intense, and it becomes more difficult to spot wildlife, as many animals hide or take shelter from the wet weather.

We have a great article about WEATHER IN TANZANIA that provides a full guide to the varied climates.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU STAY IN TANZANIA?

The best places to visit in Tanzania really depend on your goals and what you want to experience. I recommend spending at least 7 days, which is a great amount of time, to see some of the highlights. Tanzania is such a large country; it's roughly four times the size of the United Kingdom, so getting around takes time.

A 7-day trip allows you to visit a few incredible national parks and enjoy some of Tanzania’s top attractions. If you have more time and a bigger budget, staying anywhere from 7 days up to 4 weeks will let you explore more of the country's 22 national parks.

That said, even if you're only in Tanzania for a day or two, you can still enjoy a mini safari. Depending on your arrival point, you have some great nearby options. Kilimanjaro and Arusha airports are close to parks like Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Arusha National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. If you’re flying into Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park is about a 4 to 6-hour drive away and makes for a worthwhile short trip. It’s home to 4 of the Big 5 (excluding rhinos) and offers a great safari experience. Lastly, if you arrive at Mwanza Airport, Lake Victoria is just a 20-minute drive away, which is perfect for a scenic and relaxing stop.

IS TANZANIA EXPENSIVE TO VISIT?

When I first traveled to Tanzania, I booked with a public tour company which allowed me to travel with other people and experience Tanzania for the first time without knowing much about it beforehand. This was a great first experience however, because it was quite affordable - It meant that I had to compromise on some aspects such as travel with around 12-14 other people. This meant that we moved at a much slower pace that fitted the needs of the entire group. I had to share a tent with another solo female traveler which meant that I didn't have much personal freedom to have by myself.

Knowing what I know now about Tanzania, it is indeed the best place to safari in Africa and it is also one of the most expensive too. It's helpful to understand why it can be so costly. There are many factors that contribute to the total cost - accommodation style, park entry fees, guide fees, standard meals, any domestic flights that are included in your package, safari vehicle costs, airport transfers and taxes.

If you have a small or large budget, typically you can always find a safari that will suit your needs, budgets and desires - however, having been to Tanzania several times now, I would personally always opt for a private safari if I were traveling with family or friends. There are so many wonderful benefits to traveling privately that make for a much more enjoyable experience. For example, you can choose your daily start and finish times, you can choose specific travel dates, pick the locations and national parks you want to explore, relish in unobstructed views within the vehicle, ask your guide as many questions as you like and enjoy this life-time experience with just you and your companions.

Private safaris typically start at around $500 per person per day and elevate. The accommodation you choose will play a big part in how much your daily fee will cost, however this price recommendation is a good starting point and will get you a great selection of camps and lodges to choose from.

Public tours can fall in a much lower price range compared to private safaris and this is because you will be traveling with a larger group of other travelers as well as potentially sharing rooms with solo travelers too.

WHAT TO PACK FOR TANZANIA SAFARI?

What to pack for a safari is greatly determined on the time of year that you go. We have two wonderful articles that will help you pack and decide what to wear which you might find interesting to read - What to wear on a safari in Tanzania and What To Pack For An African Safari. These guides are informative and helpful for anyone who is planning on going on safari throughout any of the wonderful Tanzania destinations this country has to offer.

In short, I would advise on bringing the most important following items:

  • A selection of casual but comfortable clothing for game drives and relaxing back at camp.

  • Remember to bring personal toiletries and hygiene items as there is nowhere to buy them throughout the remote regions on safari.

  • A camera to capture those all encompassing moments.

  • Insect repellant.

  • medication for sickness (check with your doctor which to take)

  • A portable phone charger as electricity outlets are seldom on safari.

  • Lastly - A first aid kit, blanket if you get cold, sunscreen and hat, sanitizer and plug adaptors are all ideal things to pack for a Tanzania safari.

MUST SEE ATTRACTIONS IN TANZANIA

There are plenty of fascinating attractions in Tanzania, all of which are waiting for you to explore. I have devised a perfect route for you to take that allows you to see most of the well known attractions and national parks in Tanzania that are worth seeing. This route is exploring the northern circuit only.

I recommend starting your journey in Arusha. The reason why I suggest Arusha is because it is super easy to get to from either Kilimanjaro Airport or Nairobi Airport - both of which have international flights, flying in from most countries around the world. The following day, head to Lake Manyara which should take around 2 hours by car. I always urge Lake Manyara as there are some really interesting things to do here, aside from game drives. If you go during November to April then you will see the flock of Flamingos gathering on the lake which is truly mesmerizing to observe. There is also Lake Manyara’s tree-top walkway which allows you to walk above the treetops for a birds eye view of the park below - no other park has this so it's definitely worth experiencing. You will also encounter your first sightings of wild animals here which is a great introduction for your safari to come. From Lake Manyara, make your way to Ngorongoro Crater. On route, you could always stop at Tarangire National Park to snag a game drive to see the wild animals roam in these breathtaking landscapes. Tarangire is a less visited park but a wonderful place, as the baobab trees are a fabulous sighting as well as Tarangire being the best place in Tanzania to see herds of elephants.

Once you make your way to Ngorongoro Crater, you will see why it's one of Africa’s 7 Natural Wonders. The crater will captivate you by its sheer expanse with stunning landscapes, soaring crater walls as well as views to take your breath away and not to mention the concentrated number of exotic wild animals and bird species. Ngorongoro Crater is worth venturing to when visiting Tanzania as it is not only perfectly situated next to the Serengeti but also to so many other natural regions and parks too.

The Serengeti is next on my list of suggestions. This national park is one of my favorite places in the whole of Africa. It is enchanting as it is captivating for so many reasons. From wild animals to expansive savannahs to the Great Migration and the Kopjes rock formations - it’s undeniably one of the best places to visit on your journey. I would suggest a minimum of 3 days as it is so vast in size that one day will not cover much ground. If you are really feeling adventurous, why not add a few extra days onto your trip and tackle Mount Kilimanjaro? It would be a perfect way to end your Tanzania experience as well as add an abundance of memories and achievements to your wild adventure.

We cover all of these locations on our African Lion Safari adventure. There are plenty of other fascinating and exciting locations to explore in Tanzania too which we can always customize into your trip if you wish.

7 AUTHENTIC THINGS TO DO IN TANZANIA

Ruaha & Katavi Secret Safaris

If you’re wondering what to do when visiting Tanzania, you cannot miss out on the hidden gems within this country. Ruaha and Katavi are national parks known as ideal spots for secret safaris.
Ruaha is a classic safari spot with diverse options for camping. The scenery is amazing, and the wildlife is incredibly versatile. In addition, the landscapes are breathtaking, so the national park offers a thrilling adventure for real safari fanatics.
Ruaha is located in the southern circuit of Tanzania which is relatively close to Zanzibar Island. For those who want to make their Tanzania vacation a combination of beach and adventure, then this is the place you are looking for.
Katavi is another secret safari spot with spectacular landscapes and miraculous surroundings. It is located in East Africa, and it’s not considered a popular place among tourists – yet. This hidden gem isn’t accessible other than by light aircraft and encompasses only three safari camps.
If you want your adventure to be unique and authentic, Katavi is a great place to include in your Tanzania vacation itinerary. Since not many people know about it and with the national park being difficult to access, you will be able to enjoy your safari exclusively.

Rubondo / Noah's Ark

When exploring Tanzania, ensure to include Rubondo Island in your Tanzania holiday. This amazing island is known for being a sanctuary for animals that are in danger of extinction. Rubondo is located in northwest Tanzania, often referred to as Noah’s Ark. This name originates from the fact that the island camp is placed in a water-bound protected area inhabited by animals you do not regularly see. Some of them you might not even know exist.

Visitors of Rubondo island have the chance to explore the majestic surroundings and tropical forest landscapes whilst enjoying its beautiful trekking trails and observing its variety of animals. The most exciting thing about Rubondo is that it allows visitors to observe chimpanzees from a very close proximity. It is a unique activity that will provide you with an exceptional experience as well as unforgettable memories.

Unguja Ukuu Island

Making a list of the best things to do in Tanzania includes visiting the spectacular Unguja Ukuu Island. It is rarely visited by tourists and is one of the two islands that compose Zanzibar Archipelago. If you want an island that offers solitude then Unguja Ukuu is the destination for you.

You can reach this secluded island only by boat. Enjoy this enticing location brimming with flora and fauna, its true village life and unique lifestyle. When visiting the island, prepare yourself to taste the genuine delights of tropical fruits and freshly prepared fish. Plus, you can opt to visit its small village with a local guide and hear stories, its history and animals that reside there.

Unguja Ukuu is the ideal place for those who want to escape the tourist crowds and want to explore something completely authentic. Whether you choose to spend the day relaxing at the beach or diving into its waters - you will have an experience like no other.

Mahale Mountains National Park

The Mahale Mountains National Park is not on this list by accident. This spectacular park is found on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, and it is a place full of miraculous natural treasures.

Its surroundings are purely breathtaking, enticing you to get lost in its amazing forest slopes to authentically connect with nature. The Mahale Mountains National Park is home to many chimpanzees that inhabit the area. The national park was primarily created to protect these creatures and offer them a protected area in which they can live freely.

Travelers who are seeking unique Tanzania vacation experiences come to the park to explore its wild scenery, diverse location and observe its many chimpanzees that reside here. Including Mahale Mountains in your Tanzania vacation package is highly recommended.

Mafia Island

Zanzibar is renowned as being one of the most visited spots in East Africa. However, what regular tourists don’t know is there is a hidden jewel found just 160 km east of the island, known as Mafia Island.

If you want to experience under the radar Tanzania, then Mafia Island is an ideal option. Feel the real tropical vibes of the Indian Ocean whilst spending your days in the idyllic sandbars and swimming in the crystal-clear waters.

Do you love observing unique sea life? Mafia Island is known for its diverse sea animals, so expect to see extraordinary fish and sea creatures such as sharks, dolphins, colorful clownfish, rays, and octopuses. This spot is heavenly for diving fans because it offers a truly original experience.

Kuza Cave

If you want to visit one of Zanzibar's most precious secrets, the Kuza Cave is an ideal place for genuine wonder and interest. The Kuza Cave is an underground oasis, encapsulated by limestone caves that are centuries old with crystal-clear turquoise waters.

The Kuza cave doesn't just offer swimming but an array of activities to enjoy surrounded by the caves themselves. It has a restaurant, an enormous garden to enjoy, cooking classes, drumming lessons and classes to learn Swahili. You will also have the chance to explore their peaceful nature preserve with a variety of wild animals to spot, including red colobus monkeys, colorful butterflies, and many bird species - all of which are located in the vicinity of the cave.

Kuza Cave is among the best things to do in Tanzania, so consider it for your adventure.

Shifting Sand Dunes in Ngorongoro Crater

The miraculous sand dunes in Ngorongoro Crater are an unexpected sight to see but they will definitely take your breath away. The crescent-shaped sand dunes are a part of the savannah, which is close to Olduvai Gorge and the Serengeti National Park. In comparison with the land surrounding the dunes, the sand is remarkably black. That's because volcanic ash of the crater is significantly magnetized, which explains why particles tend to fall back into the sand rather than being blown away by the wind.

Local Maasai people say a sacred mountain called Ol Doinyo Lengai, widely regarded as the 'Mountain of God', is responsible for the shifting sand dunes. Because of this, the Maasai people, who gather on those dunes when there is a prolonged drought, consider them sacred.

CONSIDER THE SOUTHERN CIRCUIT WHEN VISITING TANZANIA

One of the biggest things I wish I knew before visiting Tanzania is the Southern Circuit. Tanzania is famous for the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Parks which all lie along the renowned Northern Circuit - and before venturing to Tanzania, these parks were the only experiences I had associated with the country. However, what isn't generally talked about is the less familiar Southern Circuit which is much less touristy, remote and less traveled. The Southern Circuit includes five main parks which are Nyerere (formerly Selous), Mikumi, Ruaha, Mahale Mountains and Udzungwa National Parks.

The Southern Circuit has some incredible highlights that I love about it. If you like a much less crowded and authentic experience like I do, they will offer this. The Southern Circuit provides spectacular wildlife sightings, much more affordable adventures than the Northern Circuit and a place where you’ll likely hear more lion roars than nearby travelers. More so, they provide a real African charm that is hard to find elsewhere. Another big plus is the Mahale Mountains National Park is the best place in Tanzania to see chimpanzees.

A close up of a Red Billed Hornbill

MUST SEE WILD ANIMALS IN TANZANIA

Tanzania offers a variety of incredible wild animals to observe. Throughout most of the 22 national parks in Tanzania you will get to encounter all of the legendary Big 5 - lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and cape buffalos. However, there is an abundance of other amazing species and bird life you will get to see too. Some of the wild animals that live within these natural wild habitats are swift cheetahs, colorful red-billed hornbills, the endangered wild dog, intelligent chimpanzees and vibrant pink flamingos to name a few. If these famous wild animals that roam Tanzania aren’t your cup of tea, then we have a fantastic article about the 7 Amazing African Wild Animals That Aren't The Big 5. This guide will allow you to explore the lesser known animals that pad throughout the country.
