Our one day Kilimanjaro hiking routes

Marangu route day hike

The Experience

The Marangu Route is one of the most enjoyable hikes, allowing you to experience the beautiful foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro within a single day.

You will start your hike at Marangu Gate, which is located at the eastern entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Once you have completed your park registration, you’ll begin your trek through the lush rainforest that surrounds you. Along the way, you may spot the iconic black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and an eclectic variety of birdlife in amongst the forested trees.

The trek to the Mandara Huts takes around 3-4 hours, and once you arrive you will enjoy a well-earnt packed lunch and rest before continuing your hike. At this point there is an opportunity to continue onwards to Maundi Crater to witness its magnificent views across Kilimanjaro, northern Tanzania and Kenya (if the weather permits).

After lunch, you’ll descend back to Marangu Gate. The trek back takes around 2-3 hours and you will be pleasantly rewarded by the achievement you have made on this wonderful hike.

Shira Plateau one day hike

The Experience

The Shira Plateau offers its own unique experience. Situated on the western rim of the mountain, this spectacular region allows its adventurers to explore Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic landscapes, all whilst taking advantage of breathtaking views of the mountain.

The Shira Plateau starts at a much higher elevation than the Marangu Route. However, visitors get to immerse themselves in the sweeping alpine environment, sprawling landscapes and jaw-dropping views without committing to a full summit climb. As you trek through the vast plateau, you’ll pass by captivating heath and moorland, dotting the landscape with giant lobelias and groundsels. Sweeping views extend across the plains below to the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro.

The route offers a remote experience with far less travelers. However, wildlife such as eland and buffalo may occasionally wander along the mountain’s lower slopes.

Your private guide will lead you through this incredible landscape and offer a unique taste of Kilimanjaro on this beautiful and tranquil route. The Shira Plateau is an unforgettable adventure.

Frequently asked questions about our one-day Kilimanjaro hikes

Can you climb Kilimanjaro in one day?

Yes, you can climb a small section of Mt. Kilimanjaro in one day, along routes such as the Shira Plateau and the Marangu Route. However, you cannot reach the summit - this typically takes around 7 days to achieve.

Are our one day Kilimanjaro hikes difficult?

The difficulty level is moderate and depends on fitness, altitude experience and weather conditions. Most travelers with a reasonable level of fitness can comfortably complete it. There is also an option to tailor the hikes to suit you, your ideal pace and length of time.

Do I need previous hiking experience?

No technical climbing or hiking experience is required, but a good level of fitness is recommended.

Do I need a guide for a Kilimanjaro day hike?

Yes. All Kilimanjaro National Park hikes must be completed with an authorised mountain guide. All our guides lead each private hike, we do not offer public hikes.

What is the easiest Kilimanjaro day hike?

The Marangu Route hike is the easiest out of the two because it is at a lower altitude. If you would like a shorter, easier hike - we can tailor both hikes to suit your preference.

How much does a one day Kilimanjaro hike cost?

Pricing depends on if you would like us to incorporate your hike into a safari or standalone experience. The pricing also depends on the group size and pick up and drop off points. Please email us at bornwild@bornwild.rocks for further information.

Can children participate in the Kilimanjaro day hikes and is there a minimum recommended age?

Yes, we love to welcome children on our Kilimanjaro day hikes. We generally recommend them for children aged seven and above who are comfortable hiking for a few hours. Our mountain guides are trained with children as well as we can tailor the day hike to suit you and your family and at the pace and legth you want to go.

Can Kilimanjaro day hikes be shortened if someone becomes tired?

Yes asbolutely! One of the advantages of booking a private day hike is the flexibility it offers. If you start to feel tired and prefer to finish early, you absolutely can. Not all travelers complete the day hikes, some only trek part of the way.

How do toilet facilities work on Mt. Kilimanjaro?

There will be bathroom facilities along your route and at the main rest stops. Your guide will point this out to you as you go. If you need to use the bathroom, simply let your mountain guide know and he will advise you on the best and most appropriate arrangements.

Are hiking boots essential?

Comfortable footwear is essential. Trainers, hiking boots or comfortable sneakers are all appropriate but they must be broken in. Its not recommended to wear new shoes on the day of the hike.

Is altitude sickness possible on the Shira Plateau day hike?

Yes, mild symptoms such as headaches, nausea or dizziness are possible due to the higher elevation. Your private guide will monitor you throughout the hike and arrange a descent if necessary.

What are the best months for clear views on the Kilimanjaro day hikes?

January to March and June to October generally offer the clearest conditions. Early mornings often provide the best mountain views, although Kilimanjaro’s weather can change quickly.
