Shira Plateau vs Marangu — Which Kilimanjaro Day Hike Should You Choose?

For a Kilimanjaro day hike, Shira Plateau offers a shorter but higher-altitude experience, reaching 3,610 meters in around 3 to 5 hours. Marangu reaches 2,700 meters and takes 5 to 7 hours, making it a longer but generally more manageable option.

Hiking Kilimanjaro is a big commitment that can take multiple days out of your itinerary, time that many people may not have if they are doing a safari in Tanzania as well. But that doesn’t mean you have to remove it from your plans entirely. You can also plan a day hike by taking one of the two main options: the Shira Plateau and the Marangu Route.

These two Kilimanjaro day hike routes offer completely different experiences, with varying altitudes, scenery, durations, and levels of accessibility, but both can be completed in one day with the right planning. The most suitable option for you will depend on what you’d like to experience from the trek and how much hiking you want to do. In this article, we’re going to help you choose.

Can You Hike Kilimanjaro Without Climbing to the Summit?

Hiking around Kilimanjaro National Park is possible even if you don’t decide to climb to the summit. This is made possible by the day-hiking routes on the Shira Plateau and the Marangu Route, which aren’t multi-day expeditions like the mountain climb.

These routes involve starting early in the morning and returning to the starting point before sundown, making them easy to incorporate into a wider Tanzania itinerary, something we help our clients do.

The Two Main Kilimanjaro Day Hikes - Shira Plateau vs Marangu

The Shira Plateau Day Hike

The Shira Plateau Day Hike is a 3- to 5-hour hike that reaches a maximum elevation of 3,610 meters, making it a high-elevation trek and one of the two main day hikes we recommend for our travelers. It is a moderately difficult walk that requires a morning start at 6AM or 7AM, when we’ll set off from your hotel towards Kilimanjaro National Park and start our exciting adventure.

Before you take on the Shira Plateau Day Hike, your guide will handle the required procedures for tourists visiting Kilimanjaro National Park, ensuring all the necessary paperwork is taken care of. Once that is completed, the driver will begin the ascent, taking you up to 3,410 meters. This is a significant increase in altitude over a short period, so speaking to your doctor about ways to manage altitude before you arrive in Tanzania is important.

As the vehicle makes its way up the mountain, you’ll witness a completely different type of terrain compared to the surrounding savannah in the lowlands. The ground becomes rockier, the plant life takes on a more alpine character, and beautiful mountain flora is evident everywhere you look.

After reaching 3,410 meters, you’ll exit the vehicle at Morum Barrier and begin the ascent to Shira Camp, which sits at 3,610 meters. The walk to the top usually takes around an hour, but we recommend maintaining a slower pace so you can fully enjoy the surrounding landscapes and take in the magnificent views.

Some of the most exciting highlights along this route include the clear mountain stream that runs across the trail and the sight of camps with porters scattered across the mountain. This offers a glimpse into the reality of what life is like for the people who make Kilimanjaro experiences possible, allowing you to witness it all without having to go all the way to the summit.

Before long, you’ll reach Shira Camp, where you can sit back, take a rest with the team, and truly relish the views of Northern Tanzania from above.

At this point, some people may want to continue further to places such as Cathedral Point or Shira 2 Camp. This is possible as long as it isn’t too cloudy and you’re feeling physically well. Your guide will discuss the options with you on the day and, if they’re happy to proceed, will arrange an appropriate route to help you get the most out of your time.

For those who would prefer to turn around at Shira Camp, the descent back to the jeep takes around 45 minutes. Keep in mind that this part of the route is downhill, so you’ll want to pay extra attention to ensure you make your way down safely. Be sure to watch for wildlife along the mountain, with colobus and blue monkeys among the species you may spot on the way.

Soon enough, you’ll be back at the jeep, where you can freshen up before heading back down the mountain, soaking up the lush scenery one last time as the Kilimanjaro hiking tour comes to an end.

The Marangu Route Day Hike

The second Kilimanjaro day hike we offer at BornWild is the Marangu Route, which reaches a maximum elevation of 2,700 meters and takes approximately 5 to 7 hours to complete. The difficulty level is also considered moderate.

For this trek, we will arrange a driver to collect your group from your hotel in Moshi, where most visitors choose to base themselves, as it is only a 45-minute to 1-hour drive from Marangu Gate. Alternatively, if you are staying in Arusha, which is around 2 hours away, or arriving directly at Kilimanjaro International Airport, which is approximately 90 minutes away, we can organize transfers from there as well.

Upon reaching Marangu Gate, your guide will take care of the necessary paperwork and registration for all group members. This will take some time, but once everything is completed, you will receive a briefing before setting off. At this point, you will already be at 1,860 meters, meaning you have another 840 meters of elevation to gain as you walk through the dense mountain rainforest.

The ascent itself is a completely different experience from the Shira Plateau hike. You’ll follow a winding trail through clusters of trees, with wildlife such as unique bird species, blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys often found in the surrounding forest. Throughout the hike, your guide will be by your side, sharing fascinating insights into the habitats and natural zones you pass through and ready to answer any questions you may have.

Eventually, you’ll arrive at the final point of the ascent, Mandara Huts, which stand at 2,700 meters. Here, you can take some time to relax, appreciate the surrounding nature, and enjoy something to eat with a bottle of water. If time permits and everyone is feeling comfortable, you may also have the opportunity to continue towards Maundi Crater, where you can enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro and, sometimes, Kenya when the weather is clear.

Since this is an out-and-back route, you’ll return to Marangu Gate along the same trail you came up. The descent takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, so take your time as you make your way back down the mountain. Eventually, you’ll arrive at Marangu Gate, where your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel, allowing you to relax and enjoy the rest of your evening.

Which Kilimanjaro Day Hike Is Best for You?

It depends on the type of traveler you are and what you hope to get from the experience. If we’re planning an itinerary for someone looking for a more relaxed one-day Kilimanjaro hike with less exposure to altitude, we would recommend the Marangu Route. On the other hand, if you’ve done some high-altitude hikes in the past and are familiar with how your body responds to changes in elevation, the Shira Plateau Route may be better suited to you.

Where Does a Kilimanjaro Day Hike Fit Into a Tanzania Safari?

The Shira Plateau and Marangu Kilimanjaro guided hikes fit perfectly before or after your safari trip and can be a great way to break up your time. It allows you to add something different to your itinerary, offering a complete change of scenery and the chance to enjoy Kilimanjaro on foot. Whether you add it to our 4-day Serengeti adventure or make space for it before heading to Zanzibar afterward, there are plenty of ways to do it.

Some people may prefer to have a day to recover at their hotel afterward, which can also be arranged for your comfort. It would require two additional days in total, including the hike and a rest day. Many of our guests choose this option as it provides a welcome break before moving on to the next part of their trip.
