Three days is the ideal amount of time for a safari in Tanzania for someone with little time but who still wants to experience the country's wildlife. There are plenty of parks near each other, allowing you to cover lots of ground over a few days. But where do you go?
Tanzania's northern circuit is an obvious choice for many. This area has more national parks than anywhere else in the country, giving you plenty of options, including Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Of course, there is also the magnificent Serengeti National Park, but that is a trip in its own right, so for driving time purposes and overall pace of the trip, focusing on these incredible parks makes for a perfect plan.

3 Day Safari Route in Tanzania
Day 1 - Arusha → Tarangire National Park
As you wake up in the vibrant city of Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania's northern circuit, you will be picked up by your driver / guide and make the 2-hour drive to Tarangire National Park. The aim will be to arrive early enough to enjoy the park as much as possible.
Once you go through the entrance gates, we'll then drive along the stunning winding 190-mile-long Tarangire River that runs through the park and seek out some of the wonderfully large elephant herds. Known to move in groups of up to 300. You may also even catch a glimpse of zebras, lions, giraffes, gazelles, wildebeest, and many more species.
Another highlight of Tarangire National Park is its famed baobab trees that get a lot of attention for their unique appearance. What makes them special is their thick trunks and branches that have an appearance similar to roots, so as you can imagine, they're popular among photographers.
During your time in Tarangire, you will also have plenty of opportunities to witness the park's birdlife. It is estimated that there are more than 500 species that can be seen around the park, including the stork-thighed ostrich and hornbills. If you have any particular type you are interested in seeing, you can always mention it to your guide, and they can bring you to the areas of the park where they're commonly seen.

Day 2 - Tarangire National Park → Lake Manyara National Park
Next, you're going to make the approximate 1.5-hour drive from Tarangire National Park to one of northern Tanzania's most beautiful locations, Lake Manyara National Park. While Lake Manyara NP is located in one of Tanzania's busiest tourist locations, it doesn't make it onto as many itineraries as others. That’s good news for those looking for a more authentic experience.
Given that Lake Manyara National Park is relatively small, it is easy to navigate and can be explored comfortably within half a day. It's ideal to start at the lake itself, which takes up two-thirds of the entire park - this is where you can see lots of birdlife, including beautiful pink flamingos that gather along its shores seasonally.
During your visit, you may also get to encounter the tree-climbing lions, which are often seen on top of tree branches as you drive through the parks idyllic landscapes. There are a few theories behind why they do this; some think it's them using the shelter to hide from the sun, while others believe that being up high gives them an advantage for scouting out their prey. Regardless, they continue to amaze visitors from around the world who travel to witness them in person.
If you have some extra time left in your day before the park closes at 6:00 PM, you can also try the canopy tree walk that crosses the park's woodlands, suspending you 59 feet in the air. Oftentimes travelers like to enjoy a peaceful canoe ride across the lake, watching wildlife from the calm of the waters.

Day 3 - Lake Manyara National Park → Ngorongoro Crater
The last stop on your 3-day safari itinerary is going to be the Ngorongoro Crater, which is around 2 hours by road from Lake Manyara NP. Not only is the wildlife here truly impressive, but the park is also home to the world's largest intact caldera. Its distinctive bowl-shaped landscape with a basin where countless animals gather is a sight that will leave you in awe.
From the moment you pass through the gates, you immediately notice the difference in comparison to the other parks. For many people, the highlight is the 20-to-30-minute drive down the winding road into the crater, where you’ll get your first glimpse of the animals roaming across the crater floor.
You will have a high chance of seeing the Big Five in a single day, including buffalo, lions, black rhinos, elephants and leopards. This is one of the great things about visiting the crater, as its compact layout makes it easier to spot a wide variety of wildlife in a relatively small area. The only downside is that giraffes are rarely seen inside the crater, as the steep crater walls make access difficult for them and prevent them from reaching the acacia trees they depend on for food.
There are a variety of other things to do in the wider Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area besides game drives, such as taking hikes along the crater rim. From here, you might be too high to see animals on the crater floor, but your armed ranger can tell you about the area’s ecology, flora and fauna.
You might also be lucky enough to spot smaller animals living along the crater rim and forested walls. Some of these include elusive leopards, elephants, zebras, buffalo, giraffes, baboons and other monkeys, bushbuck, warthogs and various antelope.
Be sure to also add a visit to a Maasai village in the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area to your itinerary. The Maasai are one of Tanzania’s best-known ethnic groups and are particularly renowned for their coexistence with the wildlife of the NCA.
