  • Multi-Entry Visa - $100

  • Business Visa - $250

The Types of Tanzania Visas Tourists Can Apply For

Tourists can apply for an Ordinary Visa (single entry) or a Multi-Entry Visa before they come to Tanzania for a safari. Each one has its own rules and duration length.

Here's some information about the three visas to better understand which one you might require.

Ordinary Visa (Single Entry)

The Ordinary Visa is the most popular Tanzania tourist visa option. It's available to all eligible visitors coming to the country for tourism purposes. If issued, you'll be granted a 90-day stay, and you must leave before it expires.

This is a single-entry visa, so if you decide to leave, you won't be allowed back into the country using it again. You'll have to re-apply if you want to do so.

Multi-Entry Visa

The Multi-Entry Visa is for anyone who wants to make multiple visits to Tanzania within a 12-month period. All US citizens must apply for a Multi-Entry Visa; they aren't allowed to apply for the Ordinary Visa Option.

For anyone who may want to visit the neighboring countries on a multi-day safari like Kenya or Uganda, this option is perfect because you can cross back into Tanzania for your outbound flight without paying for another visa.

Tanzania Visa Requirements

Regardless of which visa you meet the criteria for, there are some entry requirements to travel to Tanzania.

These include:

  • A valid passport with at least six months of validity.

  • A copy of your passport.

  • The visa application form filled in with the correct information.

  • Proof of information about your flight itinerary or a receipt from the tour operator looking after you for your time in Tanzania.

  • The fee for the visa you're eligible for. You can pay with all major debit and credit cards, including Visa and Mastercard.

  • Two passport photos that can be used for your visa application.

There are some additional visa requirements for those applying for a Multi-Entry visa. You can see some of them below.

  • A security bond duly signed and scanned. This can be downloaded from the Tanzania immigration website.

  • A document of registration from the company that has invited you to come to Tanzania.

  • An additional passport-sized photo.

  • Any other information to prove that you'll be entering and departing Tanzania frequently within a 12-month period.

It's important to note that US citizens required to apply for the Multi-Entry Visa are exempt from meeting these guidelines.

How to Apply for a Tanzania Tourism Visa

The process for applying for a Tanzania immigration visa is simple. You can obtain either an e-visa or a visa on arrival (VOA).

We always recommend visitors get the Tanzania visa online to save themselves the hassle when they land. It can get quite chaotic if a couple of flights have landed at the same time.

The Tanzania visa cost is the same whether you choose the E-visa option or a VOA, so it's better to arrange it in advance so you don't put yourself through some additional stress after a long flight.

Applying for the Tanzania Visa On Arrival

If you've forgotten to apply for your visa online in advance, you can apply for a Visa On Arrival when you land in Tanzania.

All you have to do is tell the immigration officer that you require a visa. They'll put your name through the system, and if approved, you'll pay the $50 fee in cash. US dollars are required.

Applying for the Tanzania E-visa

To apply for your Tanzania E-visa, follow the steps below.

After you submit your application, a member of Tanzania's immigration service will review it and decide whether to accept or deny you entry. There's a portal available where you can track the progress of your application, giving you a real-time feed of how it's going. Following the review, you'll get an email in your inbox stating the result. Although it's rare, there have been situations where applicants have been called to their local Tanzanian embassy for an interview for further inspection.

How to Pay For Your E-visa

You'll be required to pay for your E-visa on the spot before you submit your application. You can either pay with a Visa or Mastercard or make a SWIFT transfer directly to the immigration service.

Whatever option you choose, the Tanzania visa cost will be the same, except for any additional fees your bank may charge you.

If your visa application is unsuccessful, you won't be refunded, even if you have made one slight mistake when filling it out, so take your time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I Hire a Third-Party Visa Company to Apply for My Visa?

We don't advise our customers to hire a third party to help them with the application process. These companies usually add their own fees to the price, so the Tanzania visa cost will increase. Plus, the procedure is very easy to do by yourself.

Our support team is always here to help our clients when they apply for a visa, so you don't have to waste any unnecessary money

Are There Any Nationalities That Are Exempt From Obtaining a Visa for Tanzania?

Yes, over 60 countries and territories are exempt from obtaining a visa.

How Long Does the E-Visa Take to Process?

All E-visas for Tanzania will be processed within a 10-day time frame. You should give yourself plenty of time between the submission date of your application and the date you arrive in the country in case something happens to your application.

If your application is rejected and your flight is due to take off a couple of days, you won't have time to re-apply.

We recommend you apply six months from the day of your arrival so you have plenty of time to submit another application in the event of refusal.

What's a Referral Visa?

The Tanzanian government has another visa, which is called the Referral Visa. This has been introduced for people from countries who cannot obtain a Visa On Arrival. Those from the countries on this list need approval from the Commissioner General of Immigration before they can come to Tanzania.

Anyone who has to undergo the Referral Visa process must apply at least two months before flying to Tanzania. The application has to include the following pieces of information:

  • A letter from someone who knows the applicant personally or the company that has invited them (letter of invitation).

  • The fee for the visa.

  • A valid passport with six months validity.

  • A passport photo.

  • A copy of the person/company's documents who's hosting you.

  • A copy of the applicant's passport and residence permit.

  • A security bond filled in.

The Tanzanian Immigration Services advise anyone applying for a visa in this category to avoid booking flights until the application is approved.

You can see a full list of nationalities under the Referral Visa program through this link. Please be aware that the list changes regularly, so all applicants, regardless of the visa type, should check it out.
