The Great Escape NYC

BORNWILDS BEST WEEKEND ESCAPES FROM NEW YORK

When we first came to NY we stripped-searched the area to find our favorite spots and if you know us then you'll know we like to do things differently and travel off the beaten path. So heres a treat for you as we'll be exposing all our favorite secret spots in NY. Take a gander at our favorite haunts.

THREE LEGGED BUDDHA, STROMKING

Budda.jpg

StormKing is an unusual art trip. Perhaps better named 'The sculpture park'. This art and travel day adventure has everything from modern to historical sculptures. Nestled in amongst the mountains of Orange County. As you approach the Art Centre, all you will see is miles and miles of rolling hills dotted with art sculptures perfect for an afternoon of getting lost. Our favorite sculpture is the Three Legged Buddha by Zhang Huan, standing 28 feet high and weighing more than 12 tons. Either emerging from the earth or sinking into the soil. You decide.

MONTAUK BEACH, MONTAUK

Abandoned_Surfboard.jpg

If anyone tells you NY has no decent beaches, they are lying to you. We've been seeking out beaches since forever, in order to escape from new york characters and find a place of tranquility away from the business of city life - we found two. Montauk being our No. 1 favorite beach. 3 hours train ride away from Manhattan - Montauk has it - Blue water, Montauk waves, soft sand, NY's coolest surf town and perfect for a weekend getaway. This place is even more beautiful than the people and thats saying something.

THE SMALLEST CHURCH IN THE WORLD, NY

The Cross Island Chapel has to be one of the best church buildings in the world, and the smallest! This church of America is located in Sconondoa Road in Oneida. Once in the Guinness Book of Records for being the world's smallest wedding chapel. It sits in the center of a pond and has a capacity for two seated people. Cross Island Chapel.  Located in Oneida, central New York, this is known as yes, you guessed it "The Smallest Church in the World." The tiny structure (less than 30 square feet) sits in the middle of a large pond and can be reached only by rowboat. Maximum capacity is four average sized people. Just enough to hold a wedding, which they do several times a year.

BEAR SPOTTING IN THE CATSKILLS

Ok, you're scared of bears and who isn't!? but if you know how to deal with a bear then you'll be good (we don't but our guides do). Black bears are plentiful in the NY mountain wilderness and its all part of the fun of hiking upstate. And if you like your friends furry then you'll love this! Be sure to come across one if you're hiking in the summer months, deep in the forests. Just make sure you don't leave a trail of berries behind you and you'll be safe.

WOODSTOCK FESTIVAL GROUNDS

Przystanek_Woodstock_2003.jpg

The original Woodstock festival was a rock music festival held at 600 acre dairy farm in the town of Bethel, New York in 1969. Woodstock festival 69 is probably the most famous rock concert and festival ever held. The grounds, the memorial stone and museum are still available for the public to visit. If you were too young to have gone to the festival (like we were) then this is ideal to travel back in the time machine and get a taster of how it was. Essential for any music lovers out there.

THE TINY HOUSE, WOODSTOCK

The "Tiny Home" is one of fave places to stay and is featured and available in our Secret Ruin Hike. The 'Tiny House' is a tiny house nestled in the forest of Woodridge, Woodstock Catskills. Alongside the Tiny House is a beautiful pond, It is part of a 12 acre fiber farm with angora rabbits, goats, sheep, and chickens. If you are looking for a home stay that has a lil boom boom pow then this is going to be it. Prepared to be cut off from the world.

HOW TRAVELING WITH US WILL HELP SAVE WILD ANIMALS

HOW TRAVELING WITH US WILL HELP SAVE WILD ANIMALS

BORN TO THE WILD

The best stories start with 'I made a difference'. When you come on one of our trips, every hiking step can help change animal conservation. Heres how.........

1. WE HELP MOTHER EARTH

Day tripping with us is different because through every ticket sale, we give back to Mother Earth. Check out our Animals We Help page! So far we've helped The WildCRU Living With Tigers Project in Nepal, The Painted Dog Conservation in Africa and WildCRU Lion Guardian Programme in Hwange National Park, Africa and we are about to help a lot more thanks to everyone coming on our trips!

2. WE'LL TELL YOU WHICH ANIMAL YOUVE HELPED. WITH EVERY DETAIL.

After every trip, we research rigorously which animals we'd like to help. Their stories, their background and what we feel is the most deserving. We try and get as much information as we can for you! So you know exactly how you've helped, what you've helped and the storey behind them. We will even try and give you its name and personal details if we can, to make our most read-happy travellers content.

3. YOU DON'T NEED FRIENDS. TRAVEL SOLO!

We love solo travellers! We like people (like us) who have a thirst for traveling off the beaten path that want to do it with or without friends. Whats great about us is that we have a wider age bracket than other travel companies. Our age range is 21-45 yrs. We want you to feel happy and comfortable traveling and making friends with people of a similar age to you.

4. BE PRETTY. FREE FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS.

On every trip you become one of the BornWild family and we handcraft special friendship bracelets for everyone. FREE! Cuteness guaranteed on all of our trips.
