LEARN ABOUT LIONS IN TANZANIA

Tanzania for Tourists / Image: Ratana Limnararat

It is not an unknown fact that Tanzania features rich biodiversity, but did you know that throughout your Tanzania travel experience you will find the highest population of lions compared to any other African country? Impressively enough, you can find from 14 to 15 thousand lions. The greatest numbers are focused in the Serengeti and others are spread through other parts of Africa. They are protected species and the opportunity to learn more about these amazing creatures has contributed to creating our wonderful African Lion Safari Adventure, where we learn about Lion conservation through the vehicle of adventure travel! Experience this magnificent opportunity yourself - and encounter the Tanzania travel like no other!

SEE THE GREAT MIGRATION IN THE SERENGETI

Hands down one of the most impressive things you will ever get the chance to witness! The Great Migration falls under the category of Tanzania travel that you simply must witness. Imagine around 2 million wildebeest journeying from the south of the Serengeti, migrating firstly to the west, then to the north, followed by the east - before they return to the south. The cause is searching for a better environment to create and fresh grazing. As the weather changes, they migrate 800 km clockwise.

The best period to see this on any Tanzania travel adventure is from January to March when there is also the birth of half a million calves. Not only wildebeest, but you will also see massive groups of marching zebras and Thomson's gazelle, plus eland and Grant's gazelle. The air is filled with new life. Predators linger awaiting their chance to kill. Have we hinted at the perfect trailer of our Tanzania for tourists program? You’ve guessed it - this is a part of our African Lion Safari in which you will not only learn all about the great migration but also see it for yourself! Some people watch the Discovery Channel, others experience it.

VISIT THE VARIED ROCK FORMATIONS WITHIN THE SERENGETI

The Serengeti is an impressive ecosystem featuring many perspectives due to its unique landscape. Rock formations have emerged from volcanic activity related to the plateau in the Great Rift Valley. There is one active volcano that is called the Mountain of God which is worth a visit on any Tanzania travel itinerary.

Due to this type of activity - it has formed many rock formations which are authentic and beautiful. For example, you will find ancient rocks that date back to 2.5 billion years west of Mugmu, also Precambrian volcanic rocks, sedimentary rocks, ironstones, granite, mineral-poor granite, quartzite, etc. Furthermore, there are sediments and alluvial formations that keep the soil nutrient. The Crater Highlands where the active volcano is nestled, have basalt and igneous rocks. Curious to know the last time it erupted? Not so long ago, in 2013. Thrilling, right? That’s why these unique rock formations are an integral part of our ‘Tanzania for tourists’ guide. Also, visiting many rocks here is part of our African Lion Safari too.

HIKE A BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN ON YOUR NEXT TANZANIA TRAVEL ADVENTURE

We know that Kilimanjaro is the most popular mountain to climb in Tanzania for tourists and explorers, but we want to offer you a fresh perspective and some lesser-known trails for you to discover. For example, Mount Meru is also an impressive sight that features so many trekking options including waterfalls, Mount Longido (otherwise known as the Mountain of God), the Usambara Mountains, Mount Hanang, the Shagayu Forest Reserve with its Kidhege Falls, etc. Tanzania has so much to provide for absolutely any nature lover. From mountain peaks to volcano craters and lush forests to waterfalls - your day will be filled with epic adventures.

VISIT ZANZIBAR ISLAND

Another activity for Tanzania travel! Why? In all honesty, we should ask you why this island isn’t already on your travel bucket list? Just imagine, a plethora of coconut plantations, lush vegetation, spice farms, pristine waters, dreamy beaches, marine life, and our favorites - turtles! The island is large, about 80km long and 30km wide, and features so many breathtaking beaches. However, if you want some snorkeling action or want to plan various sea activities, have in mind that this is a highly tidal island. You will also see a quintessential fishing culture in the villages that paint an idyllic photo. We must note that some of the hotels are beyond amazing, and you will find many places that can satisfy your sense of style and offer you amazing views.

SEE THE CORAL REEF ON CHUMBE ISLAND

With a sustainable vision and protective actions, the Coral Reef on Chumbe Island is being maintained in a healthy and safe environment. We find these reefs to be living historical monuments of the ocean that provide so much life for us and other species. Thanks to the preservation and certain restrictions, we can now enjoy this healthy Coral Reef that is very visible in it’s shallow waters. If you opt to snorkel, you will see 90% of East Africa’s hard coral species, the feeding haven for hawksbill and green turtles, and over 400 fish species. Perfect location in Tanzania for tourists to explore and escape!

VISIT GOMBE NATIONAL PARK FAMOUS FOR ITS CHIMPANZEES

Your Tanzania travel adventure wouldn’t be complete if you don’t visit at least one of the national parks. One that we would wholeheartedly suggest is Gombe Park that is situated at the shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is famous for its chimp population which is a sight to behold! The best time to visit the park and see them is from May to October. You will need to discover them and this is more convenient in the drier months.

LEARN ABOUT MARINE LIFE ON MAFIA ISLAND

Finally, we conclude our Tanzania for tourists list with this iconic island. The name is derived from the Arabic morfiyeh, which means archipelago, or from the Swahili mahali pa afya - a healthy dwelling-place. What makes it special are the ivory beaches, gorgeous waters, coral reefs, and various wildlife species. Here, you will be able to observe and revel in many marine species like whale sharks, humpback whales, incredible marine turtles, and over 400 coral fish species. You might even be lucky enough to see other species such as dolphins, reef sharks, and dugongs!
