IS TANZANIA SAFE FOR TOURISTS?

You can feel reasonably safe in Tanzania. Tanzania is one of the safest places in Africa for travelers, in fact it's rated 6th safest place in Africa to visit. Like anywhere in the world, there is always crime and Tanzania has its fair share. Increased crime in terrorism and targeting LGBTI persons is on the increase. However, if you take the right precautions and remain alert of the dangers then you should remain Tanzania safe at all times.

WHAT ARE THE DANGERS IN TANZANIA?

There are quite a few dangers in Tanzania to be aware of. Common crimes are assault and sexual assault, mugging, robberies, bag theft and carjacking are the typical crimes. Local police do not always have the resources to attend to serious crime punctually and effectively.

IS TANZANIA SAFE FOR SOLO FEMALE TRAVELERS?

Tanzania is safe for solo female travelers if you take preventative measures. If you are traveling solo and going on a group safari then you will be taken care of on your journey by your tour operator. If you are choosing to travel solo throughout the country you will want to take more care in where you go and what you do. Solo women travelers can get unwanted attention very easily and it's paramount to make sure you are always in public places with easy access to help if you need it.

It is not advised to venture into unknown locations at night, you may run the risk of getting lost and running into unpleasant people. Tanzania crime consists of sexual assault, bag snatching, mugging, robbery and carjacking. All of which are serious crimes that you will want to steer clear of. If you are staying in hostels or hotels on your own and venturing through Tanzania solo, keep Tanzania safe by following strict guidelines and instructions. Read this guide to help you plan.

WHAT SHOULD MEN AND WOMEN WEAR IN TANZANIA?

Tanzania is a highly traditional country and so dressing appropriately will be respected by the locals as well as keeping Tanzania safe at all times.

Women, in particular should always cover knees and although long skirts are traditional in the clothing they wear - it is not compulsory. Visiting travelers can wear jeans, long comfortable trousers as long as they aren’t too tight and fitted. Wearing tight fitting clothing as well as short shorts and skirts can cause offense. Low cut tops or tank tops are also frowned upon as it is suggested shoulders should remain covered at all times. It’s important to follow clothing guidelines at all times to remain Tanzania safe and to not draw any unexpected attention your way.

IS TANZANIA SAFE AT NIGHT?

If you are in a group or public place, then you should be safe. There are many public bars, restaurants and clubs that are tourist friendly and these places are considered pretty safe. It’s a good idea to be vigilant and aware wherever you go in Tanzania.

However, the best way to keep Tanzania safe is to not walk alone at night, bypass isolated areas, not to accept rides from unlicensed taxis or from strangers and to keep your valuables hidden and next to you at all times.

IS KENYA OR TANZANIA SAFER?

Currently, Tanzania is much safer than Kenya. This is because Kenya contains much larger crimes that involve political violence, inner city crimes as well as terrorism. The crime rate in Kenya is high and although it has the above crimes surging throughout the country, it also experiences many incidences of kidnapping, carjacking and muggings too. Predominantly in Kenya’s capital - Nairobi and other major cities like Mombasa as well.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED RUDE IN TANZANIA?

There are many things that the country, Tanzania, considers rude. Disrespecting their culture is at the top of their list. Not dressing appropriately and public affection are both considered rude too. Kissing, hugging and even holding hands are to be done in private and away from locals. Increased crime in terrorism towards LGBTI persons is on the increase so its strongly advised to maintain private when showing your partner affection. To remain Tanzania safe, be respectful of the Tanzania culture, dress appropriately and act conservatively towards your loved ones.

The best ways to keep Tanzania safe is to:

  • Avoid walking through isolated areas alone as well as after dark.

  • Keep personal belongings close to you and out of sight of people around you.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU TO KEEP SAFE IN TANZANIA?

  • Pepper spray. What’s great is that 118 ml of Pepper spray is allowed in checked baggage so you can feel prepared before you step foot in Tanzania.

  • Money belt or a neck wallet. These will keep your valuables safe and close to you at all times.

  • Lock your phone with a password. Before traveling to Tanzania - make sure that your phone is as secure as possible and locked so that in the event that it is lost or stolen, you have a double layer of security.

  • Portable travel safe. It's a great idea to bring a portable travel safe with you to Tanzania as hotels and lodges don’t always supply one. We love SafeGo portable Safes - check them out here: https://safego.us
