Many of Africa's wild animals are endangered or vulnerable. The Lion is not an exception. The lion is listed as "vulnerable to threatened" and it is urgent that we change the future of the lion before it is too late.

There are many reasons why lion populations have declined. The main reasons are habitat loss, human encroachment, and deprivation of prey animals. Lions as a species will be greatly helped if we are able to learn about the problems they face and then take action to overcome them.

The African Lion Safari is an excellent way to learn about lion conservation and make positive impacts toward that goal. It is possible to combine adventure, travel, and lion conservation in a way that educates travelers who are passionate about Africa's biggest cat. Our platform allows us to provide an unforgettable adventure and also offers unique experiences that allow us to learn more about lions.

Learn About Lion Conservation And How You Can Make An Impact

It is essential that you learn about lion conservation and why they are vulnerable, and what obstacles they face. This trip is a great opportunity to learn about lion conservation and to help change the narrative through the lessons taught.

Three-quarters of the African lion population is declining. Only 20,000 lions are left in the wild and they are considered vulnerable. The ecosystem is dependent on lions, which play an essential role in conservation. The numbers of herbivores such as wildebeests and zebras are also controlled by lions. Without lions, the herd would have too many animals leading to hosts to parasites and overconsumption of vegetation. This would lead to an overall decrease in healthy animals.

Lions face many challenges. You can help the lions thrive by learning and becoming more informed on their challenges and how we can improve conservation efforts..

We will learn a lot about lion conservation on our African lion safari! Two of the most respected lion conservation groups in the world will accompany us on our trip. This will allow you to experience lion conservation at its best and expand your safari experience beyond your wildest imaginations.

Walking safaris offer a unique way to view lions in their natural habitat. You can spot wildlife, spoors, and plantations from the ground. This is something you won't be able to do when you are in a safari vehicle. You can also reach places that the vehicle cannot.

It is a great way to get closer insight and take part in nature walks on your next African lion safari.

These are our top picks for places to spot lions walking:

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is a great place to spot lions walking on foot. Three amazing areas are recommended for game viewing in Africa.

Hwange National Park, Mana Pools, and Lake Kariba. You might get closer to wild animals if you can take part in a nature-walking tour with an armed guide. A nature walk is an excellent excursion for any African lion safari.

Zambia

Zambia is known for its off-the-beaten-path walking safaris. It is also a great place to get into the bush and observe wildlife. You should not attempt a walking safari by yourself. Botswana

Tanzania

3. CLUES ON LOOKING FOR LIONS IN THE WILD

African Lion Safari / Image: S. Zander

Opting for a nature or predator walk on your next African Lion Safari is a fantastic choice as well as it being a thrilling experience. When you aren’t enclosed within the safety of a safari vehicle, walking within nature allows you to connect with the African bush and observe wild animals on foot, including Africa’s smaller inhabitants which are just as important as the Big 5. It is a unique adventure that provides a closer, more intimate look at wildlife. Take a deep breath of the rich African air, focus on Africa’s smaller insects, lion spoors that tell a thousand stories and gain insightful knowledge of the flora and fauna that surrounds you.

Spotting lions within a safari vehicle is a very different experience than being on foot and when taking part on a nature walk, you’ll be certainly looking for clues to detect whether lions are close by or have passed through the area hours or days ago.

If you are gearing up for your next African Lion Safari or merely interested in what clues to look for when searching for lions on foot, read our helpful clues below. These pointers are great for anyone who is going on a predator walk, nature walk, camping in the African bush or even glamping in the wilderness. However, we recommend always being accompanied by a certified guide or ranger to keep safe at all times.

LISTEN FOR LIONS

One of the best clues to know if lions are around, is to keep your ears peeled for lion sounds. Even though a lion can be heard 8km away, It's hard to know exactly how far away they actually are. Lions can sound like they are a lot closer than you think. Even though you may never know how far or close they actually are, a great indicator of lions being within the area is hearing their roars. Lion sounds consist of other sounds too like woofing, grunting, snarling, meowing and puffing. Wherever you go on your next African Lion Safari, always have a ranger with you who will be your protection throughout any nature or predator walk. Take his or her advice and always follow their instructions. Never walk through the African bush alone.

LOOK OUT FOR FRESH LION SPOORS

If you have been on safari before then you will have most probably seen a lion's paw print in the sand or earth.

Well, it's to be expected especially if you are entering lion territory. Coming across lion spoors on a nature walk is a highly thrilling experience because it’s a sure sign that lions have wandered right where you are standing.

Spoors can also tell you how long ago that particular lion passed through the area too.

The best way to know if a paw print is fresh or old is to look for clearly defined edges to the print. If rain, wind or earth make the spoor blurred or washed away - this is a good indicator how long ago the lion was there due to the weather that was experienced within the area over the past hours or days.

Lion spoors are also a little different to those of other wild cats. Male and female paw prints are different in size too. A male lion’s print is an inch bigger than that of a female lioness. Your ranger will be able to tell you more about the varied characteristics of spoors when you are on your next African Lion Safari.

GO TO THE NEAREST RIVER BANKS
Lions love to sunbathe, especially spending time in the morning sun before it gets hot. A good way to find lions is to venture out to the local sandbanks, riverbeds and watering holes as this attracts an array of wildlife, not just lions.

African Lion Safari / Image: Miguel Alcantara

HEAD TOWARDS THE SHADE
Once the heat rises, lions reside to the shade. Africa’s temperatures can get extremely hot and because of this - lion’s love to rest, play, groom one another and conserve their energy for when they need to hunt. These big cats can generally sleep for up to 21 hours a day so napping in the shade is a lion’s preferred choice of pastime. If your nature walk is within the heat, head to the shade and scan for lion’s within the bushes or thickets for flickering ears or changes of color.

LISTEN OUT FOR BIRDS CALLING IN DISTRESS

Birds calling in distress is a big clue that a predator is close by. A bird will sound its alarm call to alert fellow birds as well as warn of danger. These bird calls are listened to by many other wildlife species and are an incredible natural alarm that is used and relied upon by many other animals and extremely useful for a species survival.

Most prey animals use their sense of hearing to alert them if a predator is near, rather than their sight. Listen out for birds in distress on your next walking safari and let the sounds guide you towards where lions could be.

5. BEST PLACES TO SEE LIONS

African Lion Safari / Image: Jean Wimmerlin

The lion is iconic and one of the most beloved wild animals around the globe. Lions attract a huge amount of tourists each year that travel thousands of miles to observe them in their natural habitat. Lions play a prominent part in Africa’s tourist revenue and are also one of the most favored Big 5 animals, making them an extremely popular animal to see in Africa.

Travelers will travel far and wide to see a lion kill their prey or catch a glimpse of their new born cubs. Lions are as fascinating as they are compelling, which is why they are such a worldly attraction.

Due to their declining numbers, it can be difficult to find these magnificent animals. Lions have lost much of their previous territory and home range, therefore making them only available to see in some countries. The majority of lions are found in Africa so it is essential to find their hotspots before planning your trip to increase your ability to see them.

If you are dreaming of going to Africa to spot these sensational wild animals, consider joining an African Lion Safari. An African lion safari will guarantee that you will see a higher number of lions in comparison to a regular safari. It will also focus on lion habitats, lion history, observing and familiarizing with different prides, learning about lion conservation, exclusive talks with lion conservation organizations and more. Take a look at what we offer on our African Lion Safari

Our guide below will help you find the best places to visit on an African lion safari.

The Masai Mara National Park In Kenya

This national park is one of Africa's greatest and most well-known reserves. The entire park is an area of preserved savannah wilderness and home to the highest concentration of lions in a single area. This park also provides the most beautiful African landscapes to see and sustains a large variety of African wildlife. Our African lion safari visits this must-see national park.

The Serengeti National Park In Tanzania

This park is a classic place to see lions and other African wildlife which makes this park the ideal setting for an African Lion Safari. If you only have one option, this park should be it. Because of its large lion population, the Serengeti has become a very well-known area. Every year thousands of tourists travel to witness the Great Migration. This migration is composed of Wildebeests, Zebras, and Gazelles. These animals are the preferred food source for its resident lions. This is an unforgettable experience. Only here you are able to view the migration and lions hunting these great herds. Additionally, the scenery here is absolutely stunning. We visit the Serengeti on our African lion safari and witness this amazing event transpire.

The Ngorongoro Crater In Tanzania

Ngorongoro Crater is a great place to spot lions on your next African safari as well. These lions can easily be spotted on the ground and it is very difficult for them to climb up the walls. These lions have a rich and fascinating past. They have not had an easy life and almost died out a few decades back. Hjalmar the dreadful is Ngorongoro's quintessential lion. His bushy mane is full of muddy dreadlocks, which is where his nickname originated. We visit this crater on our African lion safari to learn more about the lions still living there.

The Lake Manyara In Tanzania

Lake Manyara is near the Ngorongoro Crater. Because of its unique lions, it's well worth visiting as well. The lake is breathtakingly beautiful, with its multitude of pink Flamingos and lush green forest. This lake is also home to a very special type of lion: the tree-climbing Lions. We will be hiking through this area and looking for tree-climbing Lions on our African lion safari.

Botswana

Botswana's lions are the biggest of all the African Lions. These lions, which swim in deep waters, are especially large and strong. Their hunting habits are also unique. Unlike other lions that hunt typically at night, these powerful lions actually hunt buffaloes during the day. This can make it very interesting and fun for anyone watching. If you are going to Botswana on your next African lion safari, seeing these lions is well worth the effort.

Shamwari’s ‘BornFree Big Cat Sanctuary’ is an incredible place and refuge for all wild big cats that is in partnership with Virginia McKenna’s BornFree Foundation. The Big Cat Sanctuary is equipped to educate and bring awareness to visitors of the horrendous ways in which wild animals are exploited through captivity across the globe. It is important if big cats do not want to be seen, they have the space and cover to rest undisturbed by humans.

7. THE BEST TIMES OF YEAR TO SEE LIONS

African Lion Safari / Image: Avel Chuklanov

It's crucial to plan your African lion safari at the right time of year. If you are opting to travel to Africa to see big cats, you will want to be conscious of the rainy and dry seasons since this will play a big part in spotting lions and their prides.

Throughout the rainy seasons you will have a disadvantage in observing lions as the flourishing grasses tend to be higher and much more difficult to see lions roam and stalk their prey. The grasses tend to camouflage many animals including lions.

The dry season allows you to view animals from afar as they don't have the obstacles of vegetation and growth to hide in.

Depending on which country you visit in Africa, most countries will have their wet season from November to March which tends to be extremely hot and humid. The dry season typically runs from May through to September, with June and July remaining cooler and August and September being much hotter.

Africa’s seasons are different to ours. Here is when they have their Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter seasons:

Spring - September to November

September is a lovely dry month to observe lions clearly. October is warm in temperature and there is a chance of rain towards the months end. The start of the short rainy season will commence in November. The rainy season may affect chances to spot lions.

Summer - December to March

The summer months are here and temperatures are higher and warmer during these months, making it ideal to spot lions at any time during this season. Prime time to go to Africa on an African Lion Safari.

Fall - April to May

The long rainy season is at its peak in April and May. Tropical downpours occur regularly meaning it will be much harder to spot lions within these months since most lions will be looking for shelter and taking cover within their hiding spots. Humidity is also high during these months too.

Winter - June to August

At the beginning of June, the long dry season begins. Weather is beautifully sunny and with clear blue skies - these months are ideal for any African Lion Safari. August is similar to June, warm days and cool nights with hardly any rain.

9. THE HISTORY OF LIONS

African Lion Safari / Paining: Ruben “Daniel In The Lions Den”

Lion's have spread exaltation, fear and inspiration in humans for thousands of years. They have sparked stories of revelation within the bible, myths & legends as well as cultures. The lion is the only animal that is regarded as a true icon. Symbolizing vigor and courage, lions have held this title since they first existed. But where did lions come from and when did they first roam the earth? Why has the lion ignited a magnetic attraction within people for so many years?

Lions were once the most widely spread mammals in the world. Inhabiting Russia to the United Kingdom to India. Lions have roamed the earth for millions of years. Their existence has tormented and amazed people who lived alongside them.

From aspiring Biblical stories to the ancient Roman Empire, lions have always played a significant role in history.

Lions have extensively prowled the earth, some might even say ‘dominated’ our Kingdom. Evolving from Europe to Asia and Africa. The courageous lion has padded the globe and existed in countries and climates, we never imagined it could. The lion has reigned supreme and taught us that against all odds, the lion proves evermore to be the epitome of power, courage and leadership. Only we can view this humble creature with admiration. The lion will always be a compelling and powerful creature in this world.

When was Lion first discovered?

The first lion was discovered around 25 million years ago. This wasn't a ‘Lion’ that we know, but this cat was called the ‘first cat’ and named in latin as Proailurus Lemanensis. This cat is very similar in appearance to the big cats that we see nowadays, however it isn't the same variety. The ‘first cat’ padded the earth for millions of years before the first real findings of a lion were found only 2 million years ago. A staggering 23 million years later than the ‘first cat’. The findings wasn’t of a physical lion, but of its fossils found in Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania.

What was the ‘first cat’ on earth like?

The First Cat was a little larger in size than the house cat. It had a longer tail and sharp retractable claws. The First Cats’ evolution continued throughout millions of years to where we are now, the Panthera Leo.

The cat next in line to the First Cat, evolved from an offspring that was similar to a Serval type cat around 20 million years ago. Becoming bigger in size as the generations continued, the Serval sized creature offset a handful of cat species which increased to cougar-sized felines and dispersed across the world.

Where were lions originally found?

Lions were found in several continents and countries of the world, unlike now, where they are only found in India and the majority are found in the continent of Africa.

Surprisingly, due to climates and weather conditions - lions actually existed in Europe. Germany was the first country to find its first lion fossil. They believed that these fossils were nearly 700,000 years old. The United Kingdom was close to discovering Panthera Leo fossils around this time too.

The Panthera Lion (the lions we know today) populated parts of southern Europe, significantly Greece and Spain. However, lion fossils were also found in Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia and Slovakia.

What did lions represent in ancient Rome?

Lions were a consequential symbol of vitality, supremacy and dominance throughout the Roman Empire. The Romans believed that these attributes also externalized the Roman government, making them an important and serious role within this era.

The lion was also an emblem of strength and was used in many colosseum duels and at the Circus Maximus. Alongside elephants, hippos and bears - lions would be transported from Africa. They would be used within gladiator duels, where humans would fight against these animals to the death in front of a captivated audience. These spectator fights that included wild animals were called Ventio’s. Oftentimes spectators would watch as animals would fight each other and some wild animals included crocodiles and ostriches too. Animals would also be pitted by spectators, as well as from gladiators armed with weapons.

Notably, gladiators survived on a diet of wheat, beans and barley. Meat and dairy were found in little of their food intake, branding them as the ‘Barley Men’. These courageous men performed with high strength in front of the Colosseum audiences.

How did lions feature in biblical times?

The lion features frequently within the Bible and is a predominant figure within many of its inspiring and captivating stories. From David killing a lion while protecting his fathers flocks (1 Samuel 17) to Daniel in the Lion's Den (Daniel 6:1-28), the lion continues to captivate us and proves that its symbol carries through the ages.

The most predominant figure within the Bible is the ‘Lion of Judah’, also known as the Christ-lion which is known for its symbolic meaning of courage, agility and dignity. Jesus arose from the tribe of Judah and is cited as being the Lion of Judah.

When did Lions go extinct in Europe?

Lions went extinct from Europe around 1,000 years ago. This particular lion was named the European Lion and was slightly different from the African Lion that we are accustomed to. The European Lion became extinct due to many of the same activities that African lions face today - farmers protecting their livelihoods and lions being killed through poaching or hunting.

10. WHY ARE LIONS SO ESSENTIAL TO US?

African Lion Safari

Lions are crucially important to our world and the human race.  Here are the reasons why:

Lions are essential creatures in the animal kingdom. They are apex predators as they are not prey to any other creatures in their habitat. Lions are also the only predators in Africa that are strong to kill the largest of prey like elephants and giraffes in Africa.

Lions control herbivore populations and keep them healthy.. They do this by killing prey. It's a thrilling sight to witness a lion killing prey on an African safari. African lions live in prides, and help to control the overpopulation of their prey. A pride is composed of three to fifteen family groups. Larger prides tend to move to more healthy landscapes. This generally offers a range of benefits, including the ability to reduce climate change, conserve water resources, and help preserve important water sources.

Tourists love Lions. Lions are a symbol of might and bravery. They have been loved and admired by people throughout history. They also represent royalty and stateliness. Every year, thousands flock to Africa to see the lion. People travel from all over the world to see this majestic animal, which is part of the Big 5. It is an incredible experience to be able to observe the lion in its natural habitat. This is a wildly different experience than seeing it in a zoo.

Through lion observation and conservation we hope to support the African lion and preserve this special creature for generations to come.

Join us on our groundbreaking African Lion Safari where we have developed one of the most extraordinary experiences that bridges Lion Conservation with adventure travel.

Quick fire bullet points:

Lions are apex predators and control large herbivore populations
.

Lions are important animals in the wild. Because they are so strong and powerful, they are the only animals that can kill larger African animals like elephants, giraffes and buffalo. If these populations are left uncurbed, there is less food accessible for smaller wild animal populations - including humans too.

They reduce climate change.

Lions are incredibly important to their environment because they maintain a healthy number of prey animals such as wildebeest and zebra. Maintaining healthy numbers affects the conditions of grasslands, forests, desert and woodlands. We learn more about how lions are so valuable to us on our African Lion Safari adventure.

They contribute greatly to African tourism.

Lions are the biggest attraction that brings tourism to Africa which contributes a great amount of profit to the continent. Without lions, Africa would lose its superiority and advantage over other continents.

If you are thinking about traveling to Africa to observe and learn more about lions? Take a look at our groundbreaking African Lion Safari where we bridge lion conservation with adventure.

Lions teach us and future generations to triumph.

Lions are an incredible animal to observe and take inspiration from because lions never give up. They can confidently attempt to take down much larger animals than themselves like elephants and giraffes and even if they don’t succeed, it doesn't stop them from trying. Lions live very violent lives in order to survive, protect their pride and their territory. Any lion will experience wins and losses which is not only part of their lives but part of our lives too. It’s how you rise from your losses that makes the victorious lion so inspirational.

They are a symbol of strength, power and agility.

  1. For hundreds of years, lions have been a symbol of these attributes within history and our current world today. Lions have been acclaimed through royalty, grandeur and stateliness. The ever majestic ‘king of the jungle’ has been known throughout history as strong, courageous and determined. Read more about the history of lions in art HERE

11. FASCINATING FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT LIONS

African Lion Safari / Image: David Clode

The captivating lion isn't just a cold blooded predator - the incredible lion has many facets that are fascinating to learn about and many facts we aren’t aware of.

When we journey to Africa on safari, we get to witness the lion in action - stalking prey, hunting or simply lazing in the midday heat with their pride members, but there is much more to lions that we don't know.

Within this concise article, we delve into eight fascinating facts about lions, ranging from how lions have their own maps imprinted in the brain so they know exactly where they are going at all times, how lions have roamed most countries on this earth and that lions have superior nocturnal vision enabling them to hunt their prey effortlessly in the dark.

Ready to learn more about the elusive lion? Continue reading…..

The dark mane of a lion is a sign of power, vitality, and combat prowess. Males also attract mates through their luxurious mane. A dark mane is a sign that the male has reached his peak. A lion should have a dark, rich mane.

Lions love to sleep - For them, rest and sleep are very important and they spend most of their time sleeping. Typically, lions are seen during African lion safaris relaxing under trees, in the shade of a bush, or lazing under the sun. The average waking day for lions is only 4 hours and the rest of their time is spent relaxing.

Lions do everything together with their pride. It's very difficult for lions to hunt or kill their prey alone. Lions rely heavily upon teamwork with other pride members when hunting, the majority of which will is done by lionesses. Lions can kill their prey much more quickly when hunting as a pride. Lions kill their prey by biting their throats, which makes it easier for the pride to bring the prey down.

Lions are able to see very clearly in the darkness. They have far superior nocturnal vision than humans, and this makes them extremely efficient in the dark. Lions typically prefer to hunt in darkness for this reason and do so regularly.

Lions have an excellent memory and are able to remember their territory and surroundings. This detailed map helps lions to remember where to hunt. The ability to map out their territory and work as a team makes the lion a deadly predator.

Lions will eat almost anything and are fond of diversity in their food ranging from bids to elephants to even humans. Lions have a natural instinct to kill four-legged creatures, but if they are hungry and presented with the opportunity, they will also kill humans.

Lions have roamed much of the earth. Currently, lions are native to Africa and India. However, there was a time they could be found in Greece, Iraq, and Turkey. Lions are the king of the African animal kingdom, and they are the image of strength and bravery.

Lions are stealthy predators. Lions master a total-stealth approach to stalking prey. A lions' paws are gentle and soft so they make virtually no noise as they move. Their fur is camouflaged as it blends beautifully into the background. This allows them to hide from their prey until it is too late.

Watch these behaviors firsthand during one of our African Lion Safaris!

12. DO LIONS THRIVE BETTER IN THE WILD OR CAPTIVITY?

African Lion Safari / Image: Robert Thiemann

Zoos are a popular way to see lions, especially if you aren’t able to see them in their natural habitat in Africa or India. Since zoos have existed, there have been various arguments whether zoos are beneficial for lions or if they are detrimental. Should the legendary lion be seen behind cages for humans to learn and observe, or should we keep lions in the wild where they truly belong?

Below, we explore the various arguments and questions around the topic of Zoos and if they are actually healthy for lions or not.

WHAT ARE ZOOS AND HOW DID THEY START?

Zoos or menageries of wild animals were first created for the wealthy to display their affluence. Rulers and aristocrats started displaying wild animals in their private collections as early as 2600 BCE. Displaying wild animals was also very popular in Greece, where many of the roman emperors kept wild animals to study or use in their stadiums. Many emperors found wild animals on their worldly expeditions and sent them back to Greece for their studies and games. Many kings and queens gave wild animals as gifts for their beloved or as wedding presents.

The first zoo was opened in Paris during the 1790’s and the first zoo in London - London Zoo was opened during the 18th century.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR LIONS IN ZOOS?

There are some benefits to lions being in the captivity of zoos. The main reasons are that endangered animals can live in a protected environment and additionally live longer lives. Zoos have also demonstrated that they can help stop extinction through breeding of critically endangered animals.

Veterinary care is also readily available for wild animals. Zoos also allow students to learn in-depthly about zoology and gain degree programs.

WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF LIONS IN CAPTIVITY?

First and foremost, wild animals living in captivity is not a natural existence. Captivity may offer a longer lifespan but most wild animals live inadequately. Wild animals are accustomed to large ranges of land to roam and live within. When they live within captivity, their behaviors can change to aggression, especially that of predators, due to the frustration of living in a confined space.

African Lion Safari / Image: Nour Wageh

Zoos can also set a bad example for future generations as it demonstrates that captivity can be entertainment which children learn from. Most zoos are there for human entertainment above conservation.

Even though the breeding process has been accomplished within zoos, wild animals born within captivity become severely dependent and are unable to transition into the wild.

We observe lions in their natural habitat on our African Lion Safari - click HERE to read more.

DO ZOOS HELP WITH LION CONSERVATION?

Yes, zoos have been known to help with wild animal conservation. Zoos can preserve animal species that are near extinction or severely endangered. Zoos are able to bring two species together for mating purposes to enable the species to continue to exist. Zoos have saved the following animals from extinction are - Tamarin, Freshwater mussels, Arabian Oryx and the Puerto Rican Parrot.

However, the argument may be that even though zoos can help animals u-turn from the brink of extinction - it may be better completed in sanctuaries within their natural habitat and away from human crowds.

If you would like to help lion conservation, read all about our African Lion Safari where we use travel as a vehicle to learn about lion conservation.

CAN CAPTIVE LIONS BE RELEASED INTO THE WILD?

In a word ‘yes’ lions can be released successfully back into the wild, however it is a process which can be lengthy and requires extensive training and experience to achieve. Some arguments say this process can endanger the lion as most lions won't survive in the wild after being in captivity for most of their lives. Their instincts are not as sharply attuned to those of wild lions which can cause detrimental effects. Many organizations have attempted to release captive lions back into the wild and have not achieved the desired results successfully.

None of which have been as effective as what ‘father of lions’ George Adamson achieved within the 20th century. Read about him HERE

We acknowledge that this practice is challenging but hope that through our groundbreaking adventure - African Lion Safari we will be able to focus on lion conservation indepthly as well as looking at how captive lions can be released back into the wild.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF LIVING IN THE WILD?

The benefits are that lions are able to live their lives instinctively, authentically and contentedly as nature intended. Their physical and mental wellbeing is much healthier than that of a lion in captivity. Lions are able to form prides naturally, hunt, play and mate at will.

Aside from their wellbeing, lions play a huge part in the food chain, climate change as well as bringing in an enormous amount of tourism to Africa. Proving that lions thrive in their natural habitat, in more ways than one.

The cons to lions living in the wild is that lions face many obstacles in their quest to live. Their main hurdles are human encroachment, poaching, trophy hunting, poisoning and ceremonial killings.

CONSENSUS: DO LIONS THRIVE BETTER IN THE WILD OR IN CAPTIVITY?

The general consensus is that even though lions live longer in captivity, their lives are suppressed which causes mental and physical effects. The legendary lion thrives successfully within the wild, as they are living their lives authentically and naturally enabling them to mate, form prides, hunt and kill. They may face greater life obstacles than they would in captivity but their well being is much richer to that of captive lions.

Even though zoos offer some benefits to lion species, the pro’s to lions living in the wild overrides the benefits of lions living in the confinement of zoo enclosures.

CHRISTIAN THE LION

Christian is one of the most iconic lions of history. His remarkable story is amazing. Christian was sold by Harrods departmental shop as a cub. John Rendall and Anthony Bourke bought him. John and Christian raised Christian until his first birthday.

John and Anthony quickly realized that they couldn't afford to keep Christian, as he grew in size. BornFree recommended that John and Anthony hand Christian over to George Adamson. Adamson is a British conservationist and lion advocate. His nickname was "The father of Lions" by Kenyans. Christian was then raised by the Adamsons and released into the Kora National Reserve.

Adamson created a new pride when the introduced Christian to Boy, an older male lion, and Katania, a female lion.

Christian led the pride that Boy started through a very difficult first year.

John and Anthony decided one day to search for Christian. They were surprised to find that Christian recognized them and introduced them both to his beautiful lionesses.

SIMBA

Simba isn’t actually a real lion, but an animated character from the movie The Lion King. Simba, however, is the most well-known lion in the world.

Disney created the Lion King movie and it was released in 1994.

The Lion King takes place in the African Savanna where Simba, the lion, is born. Simba loves and reveres his father, King Mufasa. While the birth of Simba is a celebrated event in this animal kingdom, not all rejoice. Scar, Mufasa's brother and ex-heir to the throne, has his own plans. After Mufasa's murder at the hands of Scar, Simba is forced to flee Pride Rock and grow up with two carefree outcasts. Simba eventually meets an old friend, and his ambitious return sparks a battle for Pride Rock that is marred by tragedy, betrayal, and drama.

SCARFACE

Scarface is a legendary male Lion who lived in the Masai Mara National Park of Kenya. Scarface is often called "Rockstar of the Mara".

Scarface was given his nickname after suffering severe injuries to his right eye during a fight for Marsh Pride territory. Together with his three brothers Hunter, Sikio, and Morani, he won the Marsh Pride territory in 2012.

Scarface became an international celebrity for tourists and lion conservationists because of his distinctive appearance and long reign as king of the most well-known prides in the region.

Scarface was a brave lion who lived an unforgettable life. Scarface died naturally, which is rare for a lion. However, his life was celebrated with awe. Scarface died peacefully, away from any hyenas and onlookers. Scarface lived wild and free in the land where he was born.

Scarface's clan of four brave male lions called 'The Four Musketeers,' ruled many prides for a long time. Only one member of the clan is alive today.

Scarface, a famous lion, was featured in numerous TV programs due to his big personality and rugged appearance. Scarface is remembered for his personality and life.

THE MAN-EATERS OF TSAVO

Two of the most iconic lions in history are the man-eating Tsavo lions. These lions are legendary because they not only killed many men in a massacre in 1898 and had no manes.

The Kenya-Uganda Railway, which connected Uganda to the Indian Ocean, was built in 1898. The bridge that crosses the Tsavo River in Kenya was built by the British during the same year. There were many construction workers on the 8-mile site. Lieutenant-Colonel John Henry Patterson, who arrived just days before the massacres, led the project.

The two hungry lions killed many construction workers over the next nine months. This escalated to daily killings.

Many workers fled the site during this period in fear of being killed. Patterson intervened. Officials arrived with around 20 armed Sepoys to help in the hunt. Patterson was successful in capturing the first lion on December 9, 1898, after many failed attempts. Twenty days later, Patterson killed the second lion.

Patterson made trophy rugs from the lions until 1925 when he sold them to the Field Museum while on a trip in Chicago.

ASLAN

Aslan is the legendary lion of C.S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia" Aslan was the only Narnia character to appear in all the books. Aslan is depicted as a talking lion and is known as "The Great Lion" and "King Above All High Kings" for he is the creator and true king over all of Narnia.

CECIL THE LION

Cecil, the Lion is one of the most famous lions to have recently made headlines.

Cecil was a WildCRU study lion from Oxford University and lived in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, Africa. This protected national park allows lions to roam free without fear of being hunted.

African Lion Safari / Cecil the Lion

Cecil was coaxed out of the protected area by Walter Palmer, an American dentist before he was shot and injured with an arrow. Cecil endured 10 hours of suffering before Palmer set out the next morning to track and kill him.

The death of Cecil triggered global outrage and scrutiny over lion hunting. Palmer was never charged with Cecil's death. Cecil's death caused a ripple effect that attracted much support from celebrities, conservationists, and politicians.

To this day, Cecil's impact has not diminished. The US Fish and Wildlife Service placed lions from India and West and Central Africa on the endangered species list. This makes it more difficult for safari hunters to legally kill lions. Cecil's passing changed the landscape of trophy hunting worldwide, making Cecil the most famous lion.

Cecil, a proud member of the Hwange National Park, was known for his dark hair and charismatic personality. He became the park's most popular attraction. Cecil was a friendly and affectionate animal. He didn't mind people coming near him. He was and is one of the most treasured lions globally.

14. LION BREEDS

African Lion Safari / Photog: Birger Strahl

It's common to think there is only one breed of lion, but the lion never ceases to amaze us. There are in fact seven breeds of lion. Only some slight characteristics and distinctions differentiate the breeds which make it extremely difficult to spot.

Below we delve into these fascinating breeds and highlight what makes them distinctive to the other breeds. We also talk about the rarest lion in the world, the allusive white lion, the most popular lions in Africa and the smallest lion who is now only found in Ethiopia. We also discuss which breed is the biggest of them all, which is the rarest, how lions breed and if a male lion can be maneless.

If you are passionate about lions, this chapter is a truly interesting read and one that will demonstrate the diverse mix of breeds and how the lion has been ever-changing throughout millions of years.

If you are going on an African lion safari, you will encounter some of these magnificent breeds on your adventure. If you are going to various countries within Africa to lion-spot, use this guide to learn about the breeds so that you are fully prepared when you journey to Africa.

HOW MANY DIFFERENT BREEDS OF LIONS ARE THERE?

There are 7 magnificent lion breeds. Read below to discover which ones there are.

The Asiatic Lion - The Asiatic Lion is the rarest lion in the world. Its numbers have decreased significantly over time. This breed used to reside in the Middle East and Northern India but now, the only wild Asiatic lions are found in Gir National Park in India. The Asiatic lion has a unique look because it has a much shorter mane than that of other lion breeds (see image below). Because of this, their ears are visible to the naked eye. The Asiatic lions are a little less aggressive too as they generally don't attack humans unless they interfere with their cubs or whilst they are mating.

The African Lion and Lioness - The African Lion and Lioness are the most popular of all lions. The African Lion is found in a handful of countries in Africa although its numbers have lessened over the decades. Now they are only found in SA and East and Central Africa. To spot an African Lion is pretty easy, they have big bushy manes, typically dark in color, a strong muscular body and small ears.

Katanga Lion - The Katanga Lion is found in regions of Africa such as Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. You could also call this lion a ‘desert lion’ as it exists in some of the most water-stricken regions of the continent. The Katanga Lion is also one of the biggest of all lions and unlike other lions, it usually only has one shade of color fur.

White Lion - White Lions still exist but there are very few living in the wild, only a handful in fact. White lions aren't a different breed, they are African Lions but carry a gene that makes them the color white. Because of their unique coloring, they have been hunted out of the wild into captivity. The only living white lions now reside in captivity in South Africa.

Maasai Lion - The Maasai lion is also called the East African Lion and resides in the Maasai territory of Kenya. There aren't many differences between the African Lion and the Maasai Lion, except for the fact that the Maasai Lion has slightly longer legs and its back is much straighter than the back of an African Lion.

Abysinnian Lion - The Abyssinian Lion breed is much smaller than that of other lions, it's also darker in mane and a little on the stocky side. Sadly this breed only exists in captivity in Ethiopia.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST BREED OF LION?

The Barbary Lion was the biggest Lion of all time but is extinct because of human hunting. Most Barbary Lions were hunted and killed in Roman times but went extinct from the wild in the 1960’s. The Barbary Lion was so big that it could reach the substantial weight of 300kg. Its appearance also makes the Barbary Lion seem a lot bigger than other lion breeds. Its dark mane stretches from around his head, down his belly and to his hind legs. Because of its sheer size, the Barbary Lion was the biggest breed of lion that ever existed. The Barbary Lion was also the strongest lion in the world too.

WHAT IS THE RAREST LION?

The rarest lion in the world is the Asiatic Lion. The Asiatic Lion breed was nearly hunted to extinction in the early 19th Century before an Indian Prince intervened and saved its remaining species. Today you can find wild Asiatic lions in Gir Forest in India, some Asiatic lions are also kept within zoos too.

CAN A MALE LION BE MANELESS?

Yes! A male lion can certainly be maneless. They can also be born with a thinner mane than other lions. Lions who are born and raised in Tsavo are generally known for being maneless. A lion’s mane is a sign of strength and vitality but is also used for protection when the lion fights, so having a big mane is quite an important part of being a male lion, but not essential.

In reference to maneless lions, there were two very famous lions that were documented within this famous book ‘The man eating lions of Tsavo’ - Read about this book HERE

HOW DO LIONS BREED?

The way lions breed can be complex. Male lions can mate with most female lionesses within their prides. It is also a possibility that male lions can mate with family members too. However, often times female lionesses choose to mate with males outside of their pride if they are in heat.

Female lionesses are typically pregnant for around 110 days before giving birth. They do not resume sexual activity until their cubs are around 18 months old and generally only have litters every two years. Their cubs stay with their mothers until they are 2 years of age and only start hunting at 11 months old. Male lions don’t play an active part in raising their cubs, however they do teach them how to fight and protect their prides. Even though the female lionesses do all the groundwork, male lions make sure that their cubs are kept safe by protecting the whole pride. Even though the male lion has nothing to do with raising the cubs - he is still a very important part of it’s life and safety.

African Lion Safari / Photog: Catherine Hinrichsen

Male cubs typically leave their pride at around 2-3 yrs old and attempt to take over another pride to make their own. Male lions are in their prime between the ages of 5 to 10 years old. During this time they are in their elitist of strength and ability, they do a tremendous job of protecting their pride and are in full bloom to mate with it’s females. Sadly, after the age of 10, male lions are no longer able to mate successfully and are discarded by the pride. Younger males takeover the pride at this stage too.

After a male lion has been dropped by it’s pride, it usually tries to live on it’s own. However, it can only catch smaller prey as it no longer has the strength it once used to. This concludes to a lion’s lifespan.

15. 5 WAYS YOU CAN HELP LIONS

African Lion Safari / Image: @heevikhuise

Helping lions and lion conservation is extremely beneficial, easy to do and there are many opportunities to do so in today's world. Even if you are unable to travel to Africa, there are lots of amazing ways to help lions from the comfort of your own home.

Impacting lion conservation is a worthwhile cause. Lions are facing an incredible amount of obstacles in order to live a long and healthy lifespan in the wild.

If there is an animal that needs your help, it's the majestic lion. Here are five excellent ways to help lions:

1. ADOPT A LION

Adopting a lion is a fantastic way to help lions. Adopting is easy and there are many registered lion conservation organizations that offer you to adopt deserving lions. One amazing charity is called BornFree and they have a variety of lions who are in desperate need of your support. An adoption is a fun way of supporting lions and can be a perfect gift too. Within a typical adoption, you will be given an adoption certificate, updates on your chosen animal, a soft toy, goody bag and more.

2. DONATE MONEY

Donating money is a great alternative to adopting, especially if you would like to donate a consistent or greater amount of money to make a bigger impact. Whatever the amount, donating money to lion conservation can make a dramatic change. There are varied options ranging from supporting ongoing projects to helping build new signature projects depending on the amount you donate. Being part of an impactful change can be a really exciting experience.

3. RAISE AWARENESS AND SPREAD THE WORD

Raising awareness and spreading the word can be just as effective as donating or adopting. There are various ways in which you can talk about lion conservation. Sharing the obstacles lions face to your friends and family is a great starting point. Starting a Facebook group or sharing informational posts on social media can also be effective. Opening a meet-up group for like-minded people to impact lion conservation can also be a powerful way to make a difference. 16. OTHER BIG CATS TO SEE AROUND THE WORLD

THE TIGER. African Lion Safari / Image: @lakshmimn68

Big Cats are dotted all around the world and wherever you are, there is a high chance that you are only a short flight away from an apex predator. Excitingly, big cats vary in so many different sizes, features and characteristics, as well as living in such diverse environments. These elusive but highly intelligent and skillful predators are breath-taking to observe as well as learn from.

Be prepared to trek for days, walk through thick forests and pin down the most knowledgeable guides in the world to find some of these enigmatic big cats. Some can lead very solitary and remote lives which makes it even more precious to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures. Just like an African Lion Safari, there are numerous ways in which to observe and learn about them.

All of these big cats face many obstacles in the fight for survival. If you have a favorite, be sure to venture to observe it and do what you can to help its plight for survival.

THE TIGER / INDIA

India is the best place to see the wild tiger roam within its natural habitat. The highest populations of tigers are located in Ranthambore, Kanha and Jim Corbett National Parks. However, there are many other Indian parks which have wild tigers too.

Sadly, there are only around 4,500 wild tigers left in the wild. There is said to be a much higher number of tigers kept in captivity. It is suggested not to take part in any human interaction or exposure of any kind towards tigers as the demand leads to expansion. To watch tigers pad their way through their natural habitat is the best way to observe them and learn from them. Like an African Lion Safari, there will be numerous ways in which to book a tiger safari in India.

THE CLOUDED LEOPARD. African Lion Safari / Image: @pnewton2

THE CLOUDED LEOPARD / BORNEO

The ever elusive and fleeting clouded leopard is hard to track down. This big cat lives in the thick forests of the interior mountain ranges of the coastal areas of Borneo. However you can find the Clouded leopard in Nepal, Bangladesh and Assam in India too. Wherever you are, be sure to take many modes of transport in order to find it.

It's advised to go with expert zoologists and natural guides in Borneo to let them guide the way. Nighttimes are the best time to spot the clouded leopard using spotlights along with expert knowledge to know where they are situated. These are very rare creatures so be sure to be patient in the pursuit to find them.

THE PUMA / PATAGONIA

These ambiguous cats are not often seen, however their population numbers are much larger than that of other big cats. There are around 50,000 pumas left in the wild globally. Pumas are rich in numbers in North and South America - you can find pumas all the way from Alaska to southern Argentina and Chile. Nonetheless there are only around 200 pumas that reside in Patagonia. Patagonia, surprisingly, has the highest number of pumas than anywhere else in the world.

These big cats are extremely stealth-like and they are very hard to find. If you venture to Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, you’ll be sure to hike around 8 hours per day with knowledgeable guides to get a chance to catch a glimpse of this elusive big cat.
