We go in search of Bannerman Island where a new constellation emerges nightly over the castle ruin on this mysterious island in the Hudson River, 50 miles north of New York City. What remains is the Castle ruins that were exploded by gunpowder in 1920 and the mystery of what happened since, no one knows what really went on here or how it happened. Since the 20th Century and In the centuries following, the island has been used by tribes, patriots, prostitutes, fishermen, bootleggers and vandals. Now what remains is a little patch of land, stranded just off shore, that holds, compressed, the entire history of the Hudson Valley: beauty, revolution, industry, decay.

Extraordinary installation artist Melissa McGill has bought the island to life through her light based art project. Every evening as the sun sets and we take our tour by boat around the island, starry lights emerge one by one with the stars of the night sky. Hovering around the perimeter of Bannerman Castle ruin, these lighted points refer to features of the structure still standing, as well as those details which no longer exist—creating a new constellation connecting past and present - bringing new energy to this majestic part of the Hudson River. Reaching further back into the past, Constellation references a belief of the Lenape, the indigenous / Native Americans of the area, of Opi Temakan, the “White Road” or “Milky Way” connecting our world with the next.

Our day starts at our meeting point - Beacon Train Station (Metro-North from Grand Central in NYC) where we will begin our 30 minute boat journey towards the island. We will be taken on a tour to visit the historical island and get a chance to visit this curious island, where our guide will tell us the secrets we want to know about Bannerman Island. After we finish our 30 minute tour and as the sun starts to set - we begin the most exciting part of our exploration and circle the island by boat and watch the lights light up the castle ruins. This trip is full of wonder and magic and this art installation is only available this year. Get a chance to experience this epic mini adventure! Book now!
